Tension is high in Keroka, Nyamira County after a gang of over 10 men armed with machete and clubs on Wednesday attacked the area and assaulted women and children.

Reports indicate that the gang moved from house to house robbing valuables including cash and mobile phones.

Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba confirmed the attack noting that it happened between midnight and 2 am.

“The robbers attacked the complainants between midnight and 2 am while armed with pangas and clubs. They wore Maasai shukas and had all their faces hooded,” the County Commissioner told a local media outlet.

According to one of the victims, she was beaten up by the gang after they invaded her home and discovered that she had no money.

“The men broke the door and entered my house. They first asked me to give them money but I had no cash with me. They beat me up and threatened to cut me into pieces. I pleaded with them to take my mobile phone and spare me,” she said.

The area police boss has appealed for calm and has promised to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

“It is unfortunate that this isolated incident could happen. We have not witnessed such incident before but we are already gathering intelligence over the happenings and within no time, we shall have arrests made,” Masaba North Sub-County Police Commander Robert Ndambili said.
