President Uhuru Kenyatta 'broke protocol' during the 58th Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu, inviting ODM Leader Raila Odinga to speak before his nation address.
The Head of State was invited to the podium by Deputy President William Ruto, and in his address, claimed he would break protocol and invite the former premier to address Kenyans.
"Today I will break protocol a little, kindly forgive me. I would like to invite my brother Raila Amollo Odinga to great you and give you his Madaraka message," President Kenyatta stated.
A public relations professional who spoke to our news desk stated that the former Premier would have been invited by Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, rather than the head of state.
"Normally, when the DP invites the president, its final. When Governor Nyong'o wound up his speech, he should have invited the former Prime Minister, who would in turn invite the DP and then the DP, the President," he said.
"If you heard even their addresses, Nyong'o recognised President Kenyatta, President Ndayishimiye and the Burundi First Lady, the DP, Hon, Raila, and then everybody else.
"President Kenyatta on his part recognised the Burundi First Family, Governor Nyong'o, and skipped to everybody else," he noted.
He, however, stated that there might have been a mix-up that maybe led to the president having to break protocol to allow the former premier time to speak.
Since his arrival in Kisumu on Sunday, May 30, President Kenyatta has toured the region in the company of the ODM leader and Governor Nyong'o.
The gesture has since caused a stir online, with netizens accusing the president of disrespecting his deputy.
