Sabina Chege Announces 2022 Murang'a Gubernatorial Bid

Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege has declared her interest in succeeding Mwangi wa Iria as Murang'a governor in 2022.

Chege becomes the latest name in the county to declare interest in the seat as Governor Iria winds up on his second and final term.

Other contestants eying the seat include Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata, two-time runner-up Moses Mwangi, former Kigumo member of parliament Jamleck Kamau, Water Principal Secretary Irungu Wairagu, and tea and coffee activist Irungu Nyakera.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia is also believed to be eying the seat.

"This time round it will be a close call for the winner. Emerging dynamics for the contest indicate there in an urgent need for all the eight sub-counties of Murang'a to convene a consultative meeting and agree on all salient issues," former Maragua MP Eliud Mbau stated.

"In the two terms of devolution, the governor has been from Kiharu sub-county, the same case with the Senators. The Woman Rep has been from Kangema. We have the other six constituencies now complaining," he said.

Sports Chief Administrative Secretary Zack Kinuthia who has declared his interest in vying for the Kigumo parliamentary seat, has stated that it is time the county's governor comes from the Southern part of Murang'a.

"We should get our act right and have the successor to Wa Iria come from the Southern constituencies of Kandara, Maragua and Gatanga," he said.

He noted that the Southern region should unite and evade being dominated by Kiharu.

Kinuthia, however, stated that whoever emerges victorious in the 2022 general polls should serve all county people without discrimination, and heal the 'toxic' politics in the region.
