Spencer Sankale, who blew the whistle on the famous Maasai Mara Heist exposé that was aired on Citizen TV has been fired.
Sankale exposed how the Maasai Mara University swindled Ksh177 million through a scheme run by Vice Chancellor Mary Walingo.
He was served with a termination letter by Chairman of Council, Kennedy ole Kerei after he was accused of nine charges.
On June 16, 2020, Sankale appeared before the council for a disciplinary hearing as indicated by the dismissal letter dated June 17, 2021.
Following the meeting, he was accused of inciting the institution's staff and members of the public against the university's administration, sustained insolence against his employer and malicious misrepresentation of his employer.
Sankale was further charged with libel and defamation and falsely maligning the image and reputation of the university.
Other charges included: sustained insubordination and failure to act in the best interest of the university sustained disregard of university standard and procedure, sustained cyberbullying and sustained disregard of university standards and procedures.
"Due to the aforementioned, the Council resolved to summarily terminate your employment with the university with immediate effect, in accordance with section 44 (4)(d)(g) of the Employment Act.
"Note that you shall be paid a one month's salary in lieu of notice," the notice read in part.
In August 2020, Sankale decried alienation by his colleagues who he says have since turned against him following the expose.
"Things have turned out to the worst level possible. I became the black sheep at work and things are not well.
"The theft has not stopped but we are sharing information with the relevant authorities as and when the theft occurs," Sankale was quoted by a local daily as saying.
On Monday, August 24, 2020, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji ordered the prosecution of VC Walingo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance) Professor Simon Kasaine Ole Seno, Professor John Almadi Obere (Acting Deputy VC Academic), Anaclet Biket Okumu (Finance Officer) and Noor Hassan Abdi (the Vice Chancellor’s driver).
They were all charged with 10 counts aligned with misappropriation of public funds.
