Ministry of ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru has dismissed reports that he is against Deputy President William Ruto’s bid to be the fifth President of Kenya come August 2022.

Responding to questions from members of the public, in a QnA published by Nation, Mucheru noted that he has nothing personal against the DP or his intentions to be president.

He further noted that if there are any differences, then they are ideological. According to Mucheru, being in charge of Youth Affairs means that he has to speak out against policies or ideologies he considers ill-intended for the youth.

“As the Cabinet Secretary for ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, I am under obligation to ensure the right policies and information are made available to the citizens of this country. I have nothing against the Deputy President, even though there may exist ideological differences.

“Matters of policy are decided by Cabinet. I sit in the Cabinet and at no time have we deliberated on some of the issues being aired in public. I strongly believe the future of our country will be technology driven and I would be failing in my duties if I did not point out that truth, especially to the youth,” he was quoted by Nation.

A month ago, CS Mucheru elicited massive debate after delivering a speech that appeared to criticize proposals made by the DP’s team in regards to the economy and youth unemployment.

"We can and must do better than this. I must add that some of these far-fetched economic fantasies are anchored on falsehoods sprinkled liberally with proclamations of sanctity by leaders who should know better,” he said in what many interpreted as a criticism of the bottom-up economic model being championed by DP Ruto.

CS Mucheru, however, maintains that he is only championing the interest of the youth and has no ill intentions against anyone.
