  • A manhunt for Masten Wanjala has been launched, with three police officers being arrested over his controversial escape.

The father to self-confessed serial killer Masten Wanjala has wondered how his son escaped from police custody, despite being under close watch.

Speaking to Nation, Robert Wanjala sought to understand how his son managed to escape from police custody without being noticed, considering that his case is of high interest in the country.

He further noted that he has no information on the whereabouts of his son, adding that he was not in any way involved with his escape from custody.

According to him, he learned of his son’s escape from the media, just like all other Kenyans.

Nashangaa kwa serikali, anatoka kivipi? Kuna njia gani?...Mimi sielewi wala sitambui pahali yuko… Mimi sikuhusika, tena sitaki nihusike. Alikuwa kwa mikono ya serikali, mimi sina mamlaka yoyote na sina hata la kusema… Vile walienda na yeye ninashangaa kuskia kwamba mtoto ametoka katika serikali… Sijamuona nliskia tu wakitangaza, lakini mimi sijamuona,” the father said.

On Wednesday, Wanjala was reported missing from Jogoo Police Station where he was being held, pending his arraignment in court that same day.

It is not clear how he managed to escape from police custody, but reports indicate that he walked out with no breakages reported.

Three police officers have reportedly been arrested over claims of aiding Wanjala’s escape from custody.

Meanwhile, Wanjala made headlines after he confessed to the murder of 13 children aged 15 and under between 2014 and 2021.

He was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in July this year, after a trail on the disappearance of two children in Nairobi led sleuths to his whereabouts in Kitengela.

The suspect revealed to the detectives that he was behind the killing of Charles Opindo Bala,13, and Junior Mutuku Musyoki, 12, who disappeared on June 30 and July 7, 2021, respectively.
