Two police officers have died from from an Al-Shabaab militants attack in Bambo area of Mandera County.

10 other officers sustained serious injuries from the Saturday morning attack.

North Eastern region police commander Rono Bunei who confirmed the incident and said reinforcement had been sent to track the attackers.

The officers were in a lorry from Rhamu to Mandera town when they were ambushed by Al-Shabaab.

The lorry was on official duty when the attack occurred.

Police said it was carrying food for other officers on the ground when the incident happened.

The militants first launched a grenade at the lorry but missed and that is when they decided to use rifles in attacking the officers.

Al-Shabaab has continued to attack security officers in the North Eastern region and this adds to many of the cases that have reported in the recent past.

In a statement, the National Police Service said they will issue further updates on the situation.

"Our officers while on patrol along Elwak-Mandera road at Bambo area in Rhamu Sub-County suffered a suspected terrorist incident this morning. No cause for alarm as security is heightened in the area. More updates to follow," said NPS.
