Before implementation of the changes contained in the 2021-2025 charter agreement, female teachers were entitled to a three-month leave while male teachers were given two weeks.

According to TSC chair Nancy Macharia, the changes were aimed at improving teachers' performance in the education sector.

"The Code of Regulation for teachers (2015) read together with the CBA (2021-2025), have specific provisions for maternity, paternity, and pre-adoptive leave

"In line with the said provisions all teachers are eligible for only one leave at a time,” she stated.
