Kivutha stated that Kalonzo is not as popular as ODM leader Raila Odinga and thus it would be a wrong move if the former premier stepped down for Kalonzo.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has stated that Aimio la Umoja will lose the August 9, 2022, general elections should Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka be its flag bearer.

Speaking on Wednesday, March 2, while appearing on NTV, Kivutha stated that Kalonzo is not as popular as ODM leader Raila Odinga and thus it would be a wrong move if the former premier stepped down for Kalonzo.

The Makueni governor noted that several opinion polls held across the country have ranked Kalonzo third with support of below 10 per cent, indicating that he would be the wrong presidential candidate in the August polls.

“If Raila ceded to Kalonzo, Azimio will be defeated. Up to now, if Kalonzo polls 6%, 2% and so on, how will he compete in real terms? One has to ask themselves, what is my weight? And accept that some people are heavy than others.

“If Kalonzo comes to Azimio I will not be able to say no; that will be positive… Politics is about numbers, but what is not good is for people to threaten others,” Governor Kivutha said.

He further stated that he along with fellow Ukambani governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and Charity Ngilu (Kitui) can rally people from the region to vote for Odinga.

Governor Kivutha claimed that Kalonzo's perceived huge following in Ukambani is exergerrated.

“The media has been instrumental towards portraying Kalonzo as a major player currently…. But Mutua beat him the other day in a by-election in Kitui, we beat him again in a by-election in Makueni. In 2017, Kalonzo lost in Kitui where he comes from two MP positions.

“…You can’t force Kalonzo to come and join Azimio…We know at the end of the day, Raila will get the majority of the votes in Ukambani, you can take that to the bank,” Kibwana opined.
