The Judicial Service Commission has advertised 61 job opportunities for qualified Kenyans to apply. 

JSC seeks to recruit 60 resident magistrates and one post for Chief Kadhi. 

Both positions are for permanent and pensionable terms.

The salary scale for Chief Kadhi ranges between Sh445,500 – 727,035 per month.

For chief kadhi, the job holder is the head of Kadhis Courts in the Judiciary. He or she will be responsible to the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary.

His key duties will be the Arbitration of disputes on inheritance, marriage & divorce among Muslim families, solemnizing and registering Muslim marriages, supervising the pronunciation of Muslim divorces and registering them, signing affidavits, declarations, and agreements, and Translating Arabic-related documents.

Other duties are supervising the registries under him/her in consultation with the magistrate in charge, and Keeping records of all arbitration, and submitting returns of registered marriages and divorces.

To qualify for the role, one must have a degree in Islamic Law from a recognized university, Profess the Islamic faith, be a member of a recognised Islamic Association, be able to effectively communicate in English, Kiswahili & Arabic languages, and Be of good conduct in accordance with the Islamic. faith

Other qualifications include Proficiency in computer application, done a Course in Senior Management or its equivalent from a recognized Institution (an added advantage), and meeting the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution.

One interested in the Chief Kadhi job must have a minimum of ten (10) years experience as a distinguished academic in Islamic law, or Islamic law practitioner or such experience in other related fields. 

The salary scale for a resident magistrate is Sh 123,780 – 190,000 per month.

To apply for the resident magistrate job, one must have Three (3) years post-admission experience either in private practice or other employment and a current practising certificate.

Interested applicants must have a Law Degree from any recognized University, a Diploma from the Kenya School of Law or an exemption by the Council of Legal Education, be Admitted to the Roll of Advocates, be Proficient in computer applications, and must not have any pending complaints with the Advocates Complaints and The commission, the Disciplinary Committee or an adverse report from a current and previous employer(s) and Must possess the qualifications set out in Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.

1. Filling an Online Application Employment Form available at the Judiciary jobs portal: jobs.judiciary.go.ke. Applicants should upload soft copies of the following documents to the online application:

(a) A letter of application;

(b) A detailed and updated curriculum vitae to include information on past and present employment or engagement with names of three (3) referees;

(c) Five (5) samples of any professional writings, including but not limited to judgments, advocacy submissions in courts, scholarly writings or any legal publications that the applicant has authored (For Chief Kadhi Only)

(d) Names of three (3) referees; two (2) professional referees and one (1) character reference;

(e) Copies of National Identity Card (I.D), Passport, or any other relevant identifiable legal documents;

(f) Copies of academic and professional certificates, testimonials, and academic transcripts;

(g) Applicant’s one (1) recent coloured passport-size photographs

(h) Shortlisted candidates shall be required to produce originals of their National Identity Cards, academic and professional certificates, and transcripts during interviews.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit valid clearance certificates from the following bodies during the interview: -

• Kenya Revenue Authority

• Higher Education Loans Board

• Directorate of Criminal Investigation

• Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission

• A recognized Credit Reference Bureau; and

• Recommendation from the relevant professional body, as the case may be, as being in Good Standing.
