Mukami Kimathi, a Kenyan icon passed away at her home in Nairobi last night aged 101 years.

The widow of the veteran Mau Mau freedom fighter the late Dedan Kimathi has passed away.

Mukami Kimathi, a Kenyan icon passed away at her home in Nairobi last night aged 101 years.

Her daughter Evelyn Kimathi has confirmed that she was taken to Nairobi Hospital where the death was confirmed.

The body is now lying at Lee Funeral Home as the nation wakes up.  

Mama Mukami has been in and out of Nairobi Hospital where she has been receiving treatment most of the time.

Her sickness has often been reportedly linked to her old age.

During her last visit to the hospital, Mukami received financial aid from President William Ruto's administration, which helped her clear Sh1.3 million hospital bill.

ODM party has joined Kenyans in mourning the passing on of Mukami saying she will be remembered for her courage and determination to see better Kenya.

"We mourn the passing on of an icon, the widow of veteran freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi, Mama Mukami Kimathi last night aged 101 years. As a nation, we have lost a great woman who shall be remembered for her courage and determination to see a better Kenya for everyone," the ODM party said in a Statement.
