The 12 security officers include six soldiers and six National Police Reservists.

Al Shabaab militants are believed to have killed at least 12 security officers on Tuesday among them, six soldiers and six police reservists.  

The deaths are said to have occurred in separate attacks in Lamu and Garissa counties.  

North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno has confirmed the tragedy and said the terror group militants used explosive devices to strike security agencies. 

He also confirmed that dozens of other Kenyans were injured during the attacks.

In Garissa, four soldiers were killed by the militants in the Sagaillu area after their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED).

National Police Reservists (NPR) who responded were contained by the al Shabaab militants leaving Six of them dead.

On the same day, police said al-Shabaab militants targeted a bus in the Afaad area in Mandera.

The militants are said to have shot at it to force the driver to stop but he sped off deflated tyre consequently saving 50 passengers who were aboard.

The attacks seem to have intensified in recent times.

On June 7, last week, two police officers were killed after their armoured vehicle ran over an IED. Five others were injured.

On June 3, a member of the National Police Reserve was killed in an attack on a communication mast at a village town in Wajir near the Kenya-Somalia border.

The gang struck in the morning at Ogaralle Town attacking the local Safaricom communication mast.

The mast is at the Ogaralle primary school where it is being guarded by NPR who responded prompting a shootout and later retreated into a nearby bush.
