Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken silence over recent Al-Shabab attacks in Lamu County.

Speaking on Thursday, June 29 during a meeting with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) president Martin Schulz at Karen, the Deputy President stated that remnant Al-Shabab militants are behind the recent terror attacks in Lamu County.

Gachagua however stated that the Kenyan securities forces are vigilant adding that stability in Somalia will mean a lot to Kenya.

"The problems in Somalia are finding their way here for the last two weeks. We have had very serious attacks by remnants of Al-Shabaab militia in Lamu county. Our security forces are vigilant but a stable Somalia means a lot to Kenya,” said Gachagua.

The second in command also stated that the government is doing everything possible to encourage peaceful settlement in Sudan.

“We have a problem in Sudan, we are doing everything possible to encourage peaceful settlement. As we speak we have sent our troops to DRC to restore normalcy and create an atmosphere for peaceful settlement. We will continue to ask for support in our peace efforts in this region,” he added.

Gachagua’s remarks come after the Al-Shabab militia attacked Salama and Juhudi villages in Mkunumbi, Lamu county killing five people and torching several houses.

According to witnesses, the attackers dragged the victims out of their houses, tied their hands and legs with ropes behind their backs before executing them.
