"We are being cannibalized economically here."

Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua weighed in on the high fuel prices debate in the country after the prices dropped in Tanzania.

Karua in a tweet on Thursday, July 6 stated that petrol is retailing at Ksh 156 per litre in Tanzania while diesel goes for Ksh 146.

“This translates to Ksh 145.6 or Ksh 146 to the nearest for diesel and Ksh 156.6 or 157 to the nearest for petrol. We are being cannibalized economically here,” Karua stated.

Her remarks come barely a week after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) increased fuel prices significantly following the increase of Value Added Tax from 8 percent to 16 percent on the Finance Act 2023.

EPRA in a statement noted that the price of petrol will increase by Ksh 13.49 per litre, diesel by Ksh 12.39 per litre and kerosene by Ksh 11.96 per litre.

“The Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has recalculated the maximum pump prices that will be in force from 1st July to 14th July 2023 taking into account VAT at 16%.

“As a result, the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene increase by KShs.13.49 per litre, KShs.12.39 per litre and KShs.11.96 per litre respectively,” EPRA stated.

Petrol is currently retailing at Ksh 195.53 per lire in Nairobi while diesel and kerosene are retailing at Ksh 179.67 and Ksh 173.44 respectively.

EPRA made the changes despite the High Court issuing conservatory orders suspending the implementation of the Finance Act 2023.
