"It's hereby directed that all day primary and secondary schools in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu Counties re-open tomorrow," CS Kindiki. 

The government has directed all day schools both primary and secondary in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, which had been asked to remain closed on Wednesday due to Azimio protests, to reopen on Thursday, July 20. 

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 19, Interiors CS Kithure Kindiki said that security had been restored to 'normal' in the three counties and schools could resume normal operations. 

"The Government has now undertaken an evaluation of the current security situation in various parts of the country, including in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu Counties. The relevant security agencies have established that the security situation in the three Counties, and in other parts of the country, has been restored to normal.

"On the basis of the evaluation, it is hereby directed that all day primary and secondary schools in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu Counties re-open for normal school activities on 20th July, 2023. The Government has taken adequate measures to guarantee the safety and security of learners and their schools across the country," part of the statement reda.

On Tuesday, the Government ordered all day primary and secondary schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu Counties to remain closed on 19th July 2023 due to safety concerns caused by the Azimio protests. 

At the same time, Kindiki disclosed that more than 300 protestors were arrested during the Azimio demos which kicked off on Wednesday. 

"More than 300 people have been arrested across the Country and will be charged with various crimes, including looting, malicious damage of property, arson, robbery with violence, assaulting law enforcement officers among other crimes," Kindiki announced.
