Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has been freed on a cash bail of Sh100,000 and an alternative bond of Sh200,000.

The former aspirant in the 2022 elections was freed after denying counts he faced after being arraigned.

He was released after spending another night in police custody after the court deferred ruling on bail.

Njenga was on Monday charged before Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia at a Makadara court with being in possession of offensive weapons that were believed to be used against the public order.

Kyamba said the prosecution had not proved how the accused would interfere with witnesses.

The case will be heard on December 4.

Njenga was charged alongside his brother Peter Njoroge and Felix Ratu. They were released on similar terms to that of Njenga.

Lawyers and family members interact when Maina Njenga and his co-accused were arraigned at Makadara Law Courts.

The three were charged with being found with Maasai rungus, bows and arrows among other things.

The charge sheet read that on July 20, 2023, in Kiserian within Kajiado, without reasonable excuse, the three were found in possession of offensive weapons; 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus and three jembe sticks.

The charge sheet says the circumstances raised a reasonable presumption that the said offensive weapons were intended to be used in a manner prejudicial to public order.

They were also charged with preparing to commit a felony and organizing an unlawful assembly.
