“Some people are deceiving us, saying that protests brought the constitution. Which constitution was brought by protests? Didn't we go and sit at Bomas and discuss it?"

President William Ruto has told off Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga over his recent remarks that the 2010 constitution is a production of demonstration.

Speaking on Monday, August 28 in Nzoia, Bungoma County, the Head of State said the current constitution was made after discussions at the Bomas of Kenya and in Naivasha.

“Some people are deceiving us, saying that protests brought the constitution. Which constitution was brought by protests? Didn't we go to sit at Bomas to discuss it? We talked about it in Naivasha and other places where it was crafted. Were we in protests?” Ruto posed.

Raila on August 17 during the Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County stated that the new constitution was brought after protests.

The opposition chief was responding to Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii who had condemned anti-government protests.

“I want to tell the Uasin Gishu Governor that this constitution we have is a production of demonstrations. I also want to remind him that if demonstrations can help families whose children were cheated of being taken to Finland then there is nothing wrong with demonstrations,” said Raila.

President Ruto at the same time asked the opposition to be respectful and not hurt the Kenyan economy through protests.

He warned the opposition that he will deal with them ruthlessly if they decide to resume with the nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

"If they continue with the protests, I have decided, and I will stand firm, I cannot allow them to destroy public property,” Ruto added.
