"We have traced her roots to a place called Meru. Now our President has given her a Kenyan name, Nyawira, which means a hardworking girl, who she is."

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday cracked delegates in Colombia when he said the host vice president has Kenyan roots.

Addressing the high-level Kenya-Colombia business forum at the Chamber of Commerce in Bogota, Gachagua said Colombia's vice president Francia Elena Marquez Mina's body shape has all the elements of a Kenyan.

"It is good for me to inform the people of Colombia that when your Vice President visited Kenya, we looked at her and she looked like the rest of us," Gachagua said.

"We looked at the way she walked and she walked the way we walk. We looked at her mannerisms and they were similar to the people of Kenya," he added amidst laughter from the audience.

Gachagua went on to say that Marquez Mina's demeanour also struck President William Ruto adding that, apparently in jest, an investigation was launched to trace her roots.

"Kenya being the origin of mankind, our President William Ruto sought to find out, what is her origin? I am happy to report to you that after extensive research, we have confirmed that your vice president originated from Kenya," Gachagua disclosed cracking the crowd yet again.

"We have traced her roots to a place called Meru. Now our President has given her a Kenyan name, Nyawira, which means a hardworking girl, who she is."

Gachagua added that Colombia's vice president will be taken to her relatives in Meru, Kenya once he gets back to Kenya for them to bond and interact.

Similar remarks were made by President Ruto when Marquez Mina visited Kenya.

"Francia has a Kenyan name. She is called Nyawira. When she came to Kenya, we were able to trace her origin to a place called Meru," Ruto said.
