The bandits are said to have surrounded the GSU camp and the primary school.

Armed bandits on Tuesday, October 24, attacked Kapindasum Primary School and the neighboring General Service Unit (GSU) camp in Baringo County.

According to reports, the incident started at 10 a.m with a fierce gun battle between the attackers and the GSU officers lasting for more than two hours.

The bandits are said to have surrounded the GSU camp and the Kapindadum primary school. It's unclear if any student has been held hostage by the gunmen.

Preliminary reports also indicated that students were held in their classrooms as they waited for the incident to be contained by the police officers. The situation comes weeks after the bandits shot at Kapindasum pupils while they were going for lunch.

The Kapindasum primary school has in recent years been targeted by bandits. The government in 2019 closed the school over the frequent attacks by the bandits.

The primary school was however re-opened in January following President William Ruto’s orderd a multi-agency team involving the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and police officers. to restore order in the North Rift.

The school had also been closed from 2017 to 2019 over the incessant attacks by bandits.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki visited the school on July 24 and announced that the government through KDF and the National Youth Service (NYS) will reconstruct the school together with other schools in North Rift that have been damaged by bandits.
