Michael Warutere scored 428 marks in the KCPE examination. 

Michael Warutere of Riara Springs Academy in Imara Daima has emerged as the top student in the 2023 KCPE.

Addressing the media On Thursday, November 23, Warutere revealed that he didn’t expect to emerge as the top student as the examinations were a bit tricky for him.  

“I prepared adequately and I did not expect this whatsoever, I did what I could do my best but I was not aiming for this high,” said Warutere.

The top KCSE candidate at the same time disclosed that he aims to join Mang’u High School for his secondary school education.

"I would like to go to Mang’u for my high school studies," he stated.

When asked about the career path he would follow after completing high school, Warutere mentioned that he hopes to become a software engineer. 

Warutere added that the science paper gave him a difficult time but he was amazed by the results he got in Kiswahili.

"The subject that gave me a hard time was science; it was not just a challenge for me but also for other students. What surprised me a lot is that in Kiswahili, I scored 88. I have never achieved such high marks in school; that is what surprised me the most," the top KCPE candidate said.

The KCPE examinations were announced on Thursday morning by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu at KNEC Headquarters at South C, Nairobi.

According to the CS, only 8,523 students scored over 400 marks. This represents a drop compared to the 2022 results where 9,443 candidates scored 400 marks and above. 

352,782 candidates scored between 300-399 marks while 658,278 scored between 200-299 marks.
