A police officer based at Kipakaren River Police Station in Turbo, Uasin Gishu county has reportedly shot himself dead accidentally.

Corporal Peter Muchemi is said to have lost his life while returning his AK47 riffle to the Station's armoury on Wednesday.

Police say it is at the time that he accidentally shot himself in the head. The bullet hit him on the lower jaw exiting at the upper part of the back of his head.

The force burst his head as it happened at close range.

Sources say the officer had sought permission from his boss, the officer commanding the Station, to leave for Eldoret for a private matter.

It is then that he proceeded to the station's armory in a hurry to return his rifle reportedly in a hurry.

It is while removing the magazine that it is said one round of ammunition remained in the chamber.

According to police, he accidentally tapped the trigger which discharged the fatal bullet.

He died on the spot.

His colleagues rushed to the scene only to find his body in a pool of blood.

His weapon and the magazine he had removed were collected from where the body lay.

His remains were taken to the probe as the officers at the station initiated legal processes on the matter,
The deceased was mourned as a dedicated and hardworking officer.
