Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to launch a nationwide crackdown on private vehicles operating as Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).

In a statement via his X handle on Thursday, November 30, Murkomen said the crackdown is part of his efforts to bring sanity to the transport subsector.

“As part of ongoing efforts to streamline operations and bring order & sanity to the public transport subsector, I have this afternoon directed NTSA, in collaboration with the National Police Service to conduct a nationwide crackdown on illegal Public Transport Vehicles with immediate effect,” Murkomen stated.

The Transport CS observed there is a growing number of private vehicles that have illegally converted into PSVs without following regulations.

Murkomen pointed out that private vehicles operating as PSVs are required to follow procedures established for PSVs including paying inspection fees and all other necessary taxes.

“This directive is aimed at addressing growing cases where private vehicles are illegally converted into PSVs without adhering to the mandatory regulations and compliance measures governing public transport,” he added.

The directive comes after CS Murkomen addressed the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) National Delegates Conference at KICC, Nairobi.
