Divers based at the Likoni crossing point in Mombasa rescued an eight-month-old baby who was reportedly thrown into the Indian Ocean by her mother.

In a video shared widely on various social media platforms on Sunday, December 3, divers were captured using floaters and a long piece of rope to save the baby from drowning in the ocean.

The divers were reportedly alerted by residents who were crossing the Likoni channel and saw the baby floating in the water.

However, the identity of her mother was not immediately established. Moreover, by the time of this publication, it was yet to be ascertained why she threw the baby into the ocean.

Following the successful rescue operations, a section of Kenyans reprimanded the mother for her actions. Led by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, they called for responsible parenting.

"Imagine a one-year-old baby girl has just been rescued from the Indian Ocean at Likoni ferry after she was thrown by her mother," Sonko wrote.

Other social media users called on relevant authorities to intensify surveillance along the ferry crossing line to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
