Nyakang'o was arrested on Tuesday morning by DCI detectives in Mombasa. 

Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o was on Tuesday, December 5 arraigned before a Mombasa Court over conspiracy to defraud, operating an unlicensed Sacco, forgery, and uttering false documents.

Nyakang’o who was charged alongside 10 other suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on a Sh 500,000 cash bail.

She was arrested on Tuesday morning by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) detectives in Mombasa.

According to the charge sheet, the charges against Nyakang’o were filed back in 2016 before she became the Controller of Budget.

The DCI detectives apprehended Nyakang’o after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) approved the charges against her and the other 10 co-accused on November 30.

Deputy DPP Jacinta Nyamosi noted that Nyakang’o and the co-accused have a case to answer following examination of new evidence.

Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua in a statement on Tuesday condemned the arrest of the Controller of Budget, claiming she was targeted because over here recent remarks before the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO).

"Timing suggestive of harassment and intimidation, especially coming after her revealing testimony at Bomas. Those siphoning government money at Treasury are scot-free but the whistleblower is under arrest," Karua stated.

Nyakang’o while appearing before the committee disclosed that her salary was budgeted three times what she is paid.

"Exaggerations are in the national treasury and let me just give one example, when I was doing the budget for consolidated funds services, this is where my salary is paid from, I found out my salary was budgeted at three times what I'm paid," Nyakang’o revealed.
