Mombasa County has set free several prisoners as a reward for a second chance in life during the Jamhuri Day Celebrations on Tuesday, December 12.
Instead of hosting the Jamhuri Day Celebrations at the stadium, Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir led his cabinet and top officials in visiting some convicted individuals.
The first time Governor visited Jela Baridi Mombasa where he granted freedom to petty offenders serving less than six months in prison.
"Together with Hon. Bady Twalib (Jomvu), Hon. Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni) and Mombasa County MCAs, we are visiting prisoners in Jela Baridi Mombasa - paying fines and securing the release of petty offenders (driving without license, obstruction, touring without uniform, walking without ID and other similar offences with sentences of less than 6 months with the option of a fine) to give them a second chance at life," Nassir stated.

He also pledged to continue providing appropriate medical care to inmates serving longer terms in various prison facilities in Mombasa.
The governor emphasised the need for rehabilitation and teaching behaviour change to reduce crime rates in Mombasa.
Additionally, in his Jamhuri Day speech, Governor Nassir vowed to tackle the menace of drug abuse in the region.
"For the past 3 months, my administration has provided NHIF medical cover under Mombasa Care to prisoners serving sentences of more than one year, and over and above that, I have directed the Department of Health to set up a methadone program here in Kingorani to reduce recidivism arising from drug abuse," he insisted.
In Nairobi, President William Ruto the national celebrations at Uhuru Gardens. City Governor Johnson Sakaja joined Ruto in the celebrations.
During his speech, Ruto highlighted some of his achievements including reducing the inflation rate, removing the country from debt distress and increasing opportunities in various sectors.
