Several security officers were attacked using improvised explosive devices (IED).

Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has issued demands to the National Police Service (NPS) after several security officers were attacked using improvised explosive devices (IED).

According to IPOA, the officers were attacked while carrying out their duties at Banane Area, Liboi Sub County in Garissa County on January 4, 2024.

The officers were on their way to Hargadera to pick up officers who had been off-duty when the incident occurred.

"IPOA sends a message of solidarity to the Inspector General of Police and the entire Service as they continue to dispense services aimed at securing the country from internal threats to the security and wellbeing of all Kenyans," the authority stated.

Following the attack which left one officer injured, IPOA directed the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to institute measures and arrest suspects behind the heinous attack.

"As the Authority empathizes with the officers who were injured in the attack and wishes them full restoration of health, it also hopes that the Inspector General of Police and the police leadership will decisively deal with the criminal act committed at Banane," IPOA stated.

Additionally, IPOA directed the National Police Service to implement all the recommendations the authority has made over time.

"Further, IPOA strongly calls for nationwide implementation and capacity building of the Community Policing Committees as envisaged in the National Police Service Act. Upon implementation, this will include the members of the public as first-line intelligence gathering agents for quick and decisive crime management."

The authority further warned against attacks on police officers indicating that amounted to challenging Kenya’s sovereignty.
