“Try not to show your fear, keep yourself calm by talking to it.”

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has issued safety precautions the public should follow to avoid a hyena attack.

KWS through their X handle on Tuesday, January 9, said hyenas are useful scavengers that clean the ecosystem by getting rid of discarded bones and debris thus preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases.

“It is lazy and prefers scavenging easy meals e.g. dead meat rather than chasing prey. During the day, they can be spotted staring at the sky, taking cues from circling vultures as their own unique GPS system to locate a kill,” KWS stated.

In case of an encounter with the hyenas, KWS advised Kenyans not to run as it will instinctively chase animals that run away.

The service advised the public to avoid lying down or pretending to be dead noting it will increase the hyena’s curiosity.

KWS also advised Kenyans not to show fear during the encounter and to keep calm by talking to the hyenas.

“Try not to show your fear, keep yourself calm by talking to it,” KWS stated.

In case the hyena growls or giggles, KWS advised one to keep ground and never to run away but at the same time not to move any closer.

KWS pointed out that hyenas are nocturnal and urged the public to minimize movements at night.

“Don't move away until the hyena does and when you do, continue to face its direction,” KWS stated.

The service further advised the public to make a loud noise and look aggressive and frightening to avoid a hyena attack.
