The bus driver was arrested on Wednesday and detained at the  Mau Summit Police Station.

The driver of the ill-fated Classic Kings bus that was involved in a gruesome accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway that killed 15 people was on Thursday January 11 charged at the Molo Law Court. 

Clement Kiarie who appeared before Molo Principal Magistrate Daisy Mose was charged with 18 counts including reckless driving, carrying uninsured passengers, and contravening the use of insurance.

The 34-year-old denied the charges and was released on a Sh 1 million bond. The case will be mentioned on January 29, 2023. 

Kiarie went on the run after the Tuesday accident at Twin Bridge in Nakuru County involving the Classic Kings bus and a Northways Sacco matatu.

The bus was heading to Nairobi from Congo and had traversed through Kampala in Uganda when the accident occurred.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in a statement attributed the grisly accident to lane indiscipline and dangerous overtaking and launched a manhunt for the driver.

“The driver of the bus is currently at large, and all efforts are ongoing to apprehend him. An investigation has commenced to establish the full circumstances leading to this crash to inform prosecution and recommendations,” read the statement in part.

Kiarie was arrested on Wednesday after police officers traced him to a hideout in Mau Summit Town.

The suspect was detained at the Mau Summit Police Station.
