The new University of Nairobi  Chancellor will serve in the position for five years.

President William Ruto has appointed Professor Patrick Verkooijen as the new Chancellor of the University of Nairobi (UoN). 

In a gazette notice published on Friday, January 12, Verkooijen will serve in the position for five years. 

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Patrick V. Verkooijen (Prof.) to be the Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, for a period of five years, with effect from the 12th January 2024,” the gazette notice read.

He will succeed Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, who served as the UoN Chancellor for ten years. 

Verkooijen has been serving as the chair of the Wangari Mathai Institute for Peace and Environment Studies at UoN since September 2022.

He was appointed to the position by UoN Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama.

Verkooijen is also the CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation and works closely with former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. 

In other appointments, Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u appointed Anne Wangeci and Bruno Walela Situma to be members of the State Corporations Appeal Tribunal, for three years.

Trade CS Rebecca Miano appointed Gad Chemoiyai as a member of the Business Premises Rent Tribunal, for three years.

Mining CS Salim Mvurya named Golich Juma Wario as a member of the Board of the Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation, for three years. Mvurya revoked the appointment of Delilah Ngala from the board.
