“The Authority shall advise once the bridge is fully safe for crossing."

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHA) has announced the closure of the Kaplong-Kisii road.

In a statement on Saturday, January 13 night, KeNHA said the closure was occasioned by heavy rainfall that has caused flooding of the road at Kipsonoi River Bridge.

According to the authority, the high water levels have rendered the highway unsafe and impassable.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority has closed Kaplong - Kisii Road. This has been occasioned by flooding of the road at Kipsonoi River Bridge, Mugeni, located between Sotik and Chebilat.

“The water levels have risen above the bridge rendering passage unsafe. This follows heavy rainfall experienced in the catchment basins that led to a surge of runoff especially this evening,” read the statement in part.

KeNHA noted that its staff has been on the ground monitoring the water levels and were earlier guiding motorists on the safe crossing sections.

Motorists heading to Chebilat and Keroka were advised to use the paved Kaplong - Sotik - Roret - Ikonge - Chebilat - Keroka route while those headed to Kisii were advised to use Kaplong - Sotik - Roret - Ikonge - Kisii route.

KeNHA pointed out that the alternative routes are paved to ensure smooth travel.

“The Authority shall advise once the bridge is fully safe for crossing,” KeNHA added.
