In a notice published on Tuesday, January 16, Kenya Railways stated the order would affect all services including long-distance trains and committer ones.
"We hereby notify members of the public of the public that payments for all services shall only be made through citizen platform in line with Presidential directive," Kenya Railways announced.
How to pay for train services
Passengers using the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and those using committer trains plying different routes in Nairobi will all be required to use this new system.

Enter Account Number: First, enter 'KRCC' followed by Your Name: For example KRCC- Samuel Msafiri
Enter Amount: xxx (amount required depending on the journey)
Enter Pin: xxxx (designated pin by the mobile provider)
According to Kenya Railways, commuters can also access the train services and make payments using the USSD code *222#.
In the new directive, customers using Kenya Railways terminals, parking at their facilities, those using their restaurants, visiting Kenya Railways museum and students admitted at Kenya Railways Institute will be required to pay using the new system.
However, each payment will have a unique code assigned by Kenya Railways.
The migration followed President Ruto's order where he directed all government agencies to digitise their services. President said the digitisation will enhance efficiency and inclusivity in service delivery.
He further argued that the system will eliminate inefficiency, corruption, wastage and discrimination that is inherent in human interactions.
The President noted that the Government will use a single Pay Bill 222 222, which the Treasury will manage. Ruto banned cash payment for government services.
