Several passengers were injured and rushed to hospital for medical attention.

Two people lost their lives in a gruesome road accident on Monday, February 12 along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The accident happened after a lorry rammed into an Embassava Sacco bus from behind in Syokimau, Machakos county.

Two passengers died on the spot while several others were injured and rushed to hospital for medical attention. The bodies of the two passengers have been moved to the mortuary.

Preliminary reports indicate that the two vehicles were both coming from Nairobi heading to Katani when the truck lost control and rammed into the passenger bus.

Police officers from Athi River Police Station responded to the accident, cleared the scene, and towed the wreckage to the station.

The accident comes hours after World Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a tragic road accident in the Kaptagat area along the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road.

Kiptum is said to have been driving the vehicle heading towards Eldoret when the nasty Sunday night accident happened.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Commandant Peter Mulinge noted that one occupant in the vehicle survived the accident and was taken to hospital.

Kiptum’s world record marathon time of 2:00:35 set in the Chicago Marathon in October 2023 was ratified just days ago by World Athletics. The world record holder died at the age of 24 years.
