The National Police Service has exposed a notorious criminal gang hijacking high-end vehicles along the Nairobi- Mombasa highway and disposing of them in Tanzania.

In a report filed on Tuesday, February 21, police noted that the syndicate targets cars used for weddings and executive companies. 

Besides carjacking, the gang also hires high-end vehicles and fail to return them leaving owners counting losses.

The gang was busted after they stole a car in Machakos and drove towards Kitui where detectives waylaid them.

"The National Police Service takes this opportunity to update the public regarding a photo circulating on the social media, of three suspected carjackers operating within Machakos, Makueni and Mlolongo areas of Eastern Region," police statement read in part.

"The said suspected gang members were arrested at Kitui Kwa Vonza area on 14/1/2024 following theft of a motor vehicle in Machakos. Investigation has revealed that the suspects namely George Maloba Osokho, Martin Nyamai, Edward Rogova Mudachi, and Morris Muli Lumumba have a previous criminal record of October 28, 2023, within Makueni Kwa Kathoka area, charged at Machakos Law Courts vide CF 440/770,/2023 for robbery with violence," it added.

On Monday February 20, the suspects were charged with murder and robbery following DCI's request which they denied and were remanded at Makueni Main Prison.

During the court hearing, DCI revealed their cross-border operation and a scheme targeting executive vehicles. 

"Investigations also suggest that they are part of a syndicate operating between Nairobi, Mlolongo, Machakos, Makueni and across the Kenya-Tanzania border where stolen/robbed/ hired vehicles are sold/disposed off," DCI explained.

"Their strategies include hiring of vehicles for weddings/engagements from companies, never to return the vehicles. The cases are Pending Before Courts in Makueni and Machakos."
