President Ruto Explains His Decision To Support Raila For AU Job

President William Ruto has explicated his decision to support Azimio leader Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission chairperson position.

Speaking on Monday, February 27 in Homa Bay, Ruto reminded the locals he had planned to unite the country after the 2022 general elections.

The Head of State noted that no one should be excluded from the government despite political affiliations.

“There are things I told you guys and you thought it was a joke. Now, you can see it wasn't a joke. I told you that we would organize everything thoroughly, and no one would be a loser. We will plan so that everyone gets a little share, and then we can move forward. We pray that it all works out as planned,” said Ruto.

The President went on to say working towards unity is important for the country adding that that there is enough space for everyone in the government.

“There is space for all of us in Kenya you do not win by making others lose we want a win-win outcome for all of us. Those in opposition must mean well for Kenya and those in government must also mean well but there are no Kenyans in opposition or this other side,” Ruto added. 

His remarks come a day after he and Raila met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at his Kisozi country home in Uganda.

The trio discussed issues of interest for both Kenya and Uganda and also discussed Odinga's African Union bid.

"Also discussed was the declared candidacy of Kenya's former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the Africa Union Commission chairmanship,” Ruto said in a statement.

Raila on February 15 announced his interest in replacing Moussa Faki when his term lapses in 2025.
