“Accept that as the government, you have failed in this crisis."

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has slammed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over the failure of the security agencies to arrest drug barons in the county.

Speaking on Saturday, March 2, Governor Nassir wondered why the government is yet to arrest any drug baron in the county despite the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome issuing an ultimatum to the Mombasa County Commissioner to make arrests.

“Accept that as the government, you have failed in this crisis. You have local elders, ambassadors, security forces, and various means to gather intelligence, yet you are failing to apprehend drug traffickers,” said Nassir.

The Mombasa County boss dared the government to arrest drug barons and parade them publicly for Kenyans to know them.

“Until when will you keep deceiving the people of Mombasa? Until when will you persist in this downward trend of making false promises every day? We are telling you now to take action and apprehend them, then publicly expose them in front of the people of Mombasa as the ones selling drugs. Stop lying to the people,” Governor Nassir added.

His remarks come days after DP Gachagua convened the Coast Region Alcohol and Drug Abuse Conference in Mombasa County to discuss the fight against drugs and alcohol abuse in the region.

During the conference, Gachagua called out coast region politicians for being silent on the drug and illicit alcohol issues.

"Why are most Coast leaders quiet on the issue of drugs yet it is a huge problem affecting the people they lead? Could it be that they are scared of drug barons? These are elected leaders what are they not talking or could it be some of these drug barons assisted them during the elections?” Gachagua posed.

The DP also questioned the absence of some leaders in the conference which was aimed at finding solutions for drug and alcohol menace in the region.
