Major media websites have crashed worldwide for unknown reasons, according to Al Jazeera.

Financial Times, New York Times, Bloomberg News and Guardian websites are some of the media websites that were reported to have gone down on Tuesday.

The UK government’s main website too was also unavailable and The White House website had an error message but later restored.

Other affected websites include CNN and Twitch. On CNN's website could not load and visitors found a message reading, “Fastly error: unknown domain: cnn.com.”

Visits to the New York Times and U.K. government’s gov.uk site stated “Error 503 Service Unavailable”

The web outage is believed to have been caused by a data centre provider named Fastly.

Fastly operates technology known as an "edge cloud", which is designed to speed up loading times for websites.

This tech also protects websites from denial-of-service attacks.
