Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has announced December 31, 2021, as the day the Luhya community will name their preferred presidential candidate.

The trade unionist stated that Luhya community leaders will hold a meeting at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega where they will discuss their political interests and name their candidate after.

“I have already said that on 31st, the Luhya community will emerge at Bukhungu stadium to determine and to listen to Luhya leaders and plan a sense of direction as to who should lead us among the people who have declared their candidacy,” Atwoli said.

The COTU boss called upon Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula to mark the date if he intends to contest the presidency in 2022.

Atwoli noted that the meeting will also be graced by Luhya leaders in the diaspora.

“And if Moses Wetangula is a presidential candidate let him come to Bukhungu also and tell people who he is collaborating with and how strong and effective and rooted he is,” he said.

In a meeting in October, Atwoli was picked as the regions negotiator with a mandate to talk with presidential aspirants to ensure that the region is included in the next government.

In recent days, Atwoli's talk has majorly leaned towards the presidency of ODM Leader Raila Odinga.

The Luhya Leaders caucus is inclusive of Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya who is also the ODM deputy party leader.

However, the region is home to ANC Leader Musalia Mudavadi who has since declared his presidential bid and enjoys a huge following among the Luhya community.
