State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita has announced his run for the Machakos County gubernatorial seat in the August 9, 2022, general elections.

State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita has announced his run for the Machakos County gubernatorial seat in the August 9, 2022, general elections.

The announcement was revealed by the number of billboards erected in Machakos County with the writing 'Masaku Mbee 2022' (Masaku Ahead 2022) bearing Waita's image. A website with the name was also launched last week.

Waita who also heads the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) described himself as the candidate best fit to take over from incumbent, Dr Alfred Mutua who is serving his final term.

Waita joins a host of candidates interested in the Machakos County gubernatorial seat. However, all civil servants interested in politics will have to vacate office by February 9.

On his campaign website, the former head of Corporate at Safaricom stated that as a son of Machakos county, he is best suited to take reigns at the county as compared to his opponents.

He proceeds to list a six point agenda of what he will fulfill should he be elected governor in the upcoming general polls.

Other interested contestants include; Transport CAS Wavinya Ndeti, Machakos assembly speaker Florence Mwangangi, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, Deputy Governor Francis Maliti, city lawyer Kyatha Mbaluka, United Democratic Alliance chairman Johnson Muthama and former Machakos Assembly Speaker Bernard Mung’ata.

Waita's declaration has since elicited mixed reactions among experts.
