Billionaire businesswoman Mary Wambui Mungai has been freed on Ksh50,000 cash bail or Ksh100,000 bond and a similar surety for the possession of firearms without a valid license.

Wambui was in court for allegedly failing to remit taxes totalling Ksh2.2 billion despite landing lucrative tenders with state agencies and the military.

The billionaire was represented in court by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi and Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.

The case will be mentioned on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.

Wambui had been detained at the Muthaiga Police Station.

The Purma Holdings Ltd director surrendered her firearm- a semi-automatic CZ 75 to Runda Police Station on December 15, 2021, after the Firearms Licencing Board revealed that she was illegally possessing it.

The board stated that she would be allowed to retrieve the firearm after her renewal appeal had been approved.

Wambui and her daughter, Purity Njoki Mungai, surrendered to the authorities at the Milimali Law Courts on December 9, 2021, after evading a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) dragnet at the Weston Hotel where they had been hiding.

KRA officers who raided their hideout at Weston Hotel recovered some of their personal belongings, including bank cards, and car keys.

The two are facing eight counts of knowingly and unlawfully omitting taxes due in the income tax returns submitted to the Commissioner for Domestic Taxes for the period between 2014 and 2016.
