Confirming the report, Bungoma County Criminal Investigations boss Joseph Ondoro revealed that the empty boxes were abandoned at a homestead in Bumula.

Police in Bungoma have recovered two empty cash boxes which are believed to have been used to cart away Ksh25 million following a bank robbery in Kimilili on Tuesday, March 1, 2022.

Confirming the report, Bungoma County Criminal Investigations boss Joseph Ondoro revealed that the empty boxes were abandoned at a homestead in Bumula.

"A woman at the homestead discovered them near her gate and alerted police officers on Tuesday night," Ondoro told the Nation on Wednesday, March 2.

Two police officers were shot during the daring Tuesday afternoon robbery at Ushirika Bank.

The robbery occurred just as the cash in transit was brought in from Cooperative Bank, Bungoma branch under the escort of the injured officers.

"Our preliminary probe has established that the money, Ksh25 million meant to pay farmers, was being escorted from Cooperative Bank in Bungoma town to Ushirika Bank in Kimilili town to pay coffee farmers before the thugs, whom we suspect had waylaid the security officers, made a daring attack and fled with the cash just a few minutes after the money arrived at Ushirika Bank this afternoon," Kimilili sub-county police commander Muita Marwa said.

According to a police report, the Ushirika bank manager Kennedy Khalakai was shot in the stomach.

“The three were taken to Kimilili Sub-County Hospital and later transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for advanced treatment. They are all in stable conditions,” police said in a report filed at a Kimilili police station.
