Tthe Rembo Shuttle bus was heading from Kitengela to Nairobi when it rammed into a lorry ferrying sand after attempting to overtake another vehicle near Sabaki estate at the Athi River turn-off.

Several people were reported injured following a grisly accident along Mombasa Road on Friday morning, March 18, 2022.

According to reports, the Rembo Shuttle bus was heading from Kitengela to Nairobi when it rammed into a lorry ferrying sand after attempting to overtake another vehicle near Sabaki estate at the Athi River turn-off.

"I was driving behind the bus…the speeding driver tried to dangerously overtake another bus belonging to the same sacco," motorist John Nyabuti told the Nation.


Further reports indicate that to passengers were trapped in the bus following the accident. One of the passengers, a woman, had her legs trapped by the dashboard in the cabin. Police from the Athi River Police Station worked in conjunction with members of the public to free her.

It took them 45 minutes to free her from the cabin using metal bars as she writhed in pain.

The victims were rushed to the Shalom Hospital.

The bus was later towed to the Athi River Police Station.

Confirming the incident, Athi River Traffic Commander Agnes Makau said her officers will monitor drivers closely as they ply the busy highway.

"No death was recorded but we would like to urge motorists to be more vigilant especially in the morning when their vision may be blurred by fog," she said.

About 30 minutes earlier, a person was runover by a speeding motorist around the same area.
