IEBC said Aukot was disqualified for not meeting the supporters’ signatures requirement.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has disqualified Thirdway Alliance candidate Ekuru Aukot from the August 9, presidential race.

According to the commission, Aukot was disqualified for not meeting the supporters’ signatures requirement.

IEBC Returning Officer Wafula Chebukati rejected his application saying Ekuru Aukot had also failed to provide ID copies of his supporters, one of the requirements needed by the commission for clearance.

"Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) Returning Officer for the Presidential election Wafula Chebukati rejects application by Thirdway Alliance Kenya Party Presidential Candidate Dr. Ekuru Aukot.

"This is after he failed to provide ID copies of his supporters. Dr Aukot also failed to meet the minimum number of signatures from his supporters, which is required for registration as a Presidential candidate," read IEBC's tweet.

Speaking after the decision, Dr. Aukot termed the requirement impractical. He becomes the second candidate to have his papers rejected by the commission today.

Earlier on, IEBC had also rejected the application by Independent candidate George Munyottah. IEBC said Munyottah's application had been rejected for not meeting the minimum number of supporters' IDs and signatures.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance candidate Raila Odinga was the first one to appear before the commission and was cleared to join his main competitor William Ruto of UDA, who was cleared on Saturday, June 4.
