Anwar will be leaving the business effective July 31, 2023, once his secondment comes to an end.


Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa has announced the exit of Ethiopia Chief Executive Officer Anwar Soussa. 

Anwar will be leaving the business effective July 31, 2023, once his secondment comes to an end.

He leaves Safaricom Ethiopia having led the establishment of the organisation, set up business operations and roll out a high-quality network, Ndegwa said.

He joined the giant telco in August 2021.

"As the first CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Anwar has overseen the attainment of significant milestones in a highly dynamic environment, including onboarding the team and successfully launching commercial operations of the second telecommunications operator in Ethiopia," Ndegwa said in a statement.

Ndegwa said the exiting Chief has steered Safaricom Ethiopia to acquire over 4 million customers, with the network now covering more than 25 per cent of the population and spread across 50 cities/towns.

It was during his tenure that, Ndegwa said, Safaricom Ethiopia also secured a mobile financial services licence, paving the way for the launch of M-PESA services.

"I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Anwar for his leadership and contributions to Safaricom Ethiopia. Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated unwavering passion and commitment, which have played a crucial role in our achievements thus far. We will announce Anwar’s successor in due course," Ndegwa said,

"I wish Anwar the best in his future endeavours as his assignment with Safaricom Ethiopia comes to an end,"
