Kenya Wildlife (KWS) has issued an update after velvet monkeys invaded two villages in Murang'a County.

In the statement to newsrooms on Sunday, January 15, the monkeys invaded farms and destroyed crops in Kahethu and Riaini villages of Kiunyu location in Murang’a County.

The invasion has since led to human-wildlife conflict as locals battle the monkeys to protect their crops.

"Velvet monkeys are reported to have invaded the area farms and destroyed crops. The Service has taken elaborate measures to stem human wildlife conflict (HWC) and encourages co-existence between wildlife and communities. Besides working closely with communities, KWS has established a rapid response unit known as Problem Animal Management Unit (PAMU) to patrol areas most affected by HWC," part of the statement by KWS read.

Locals in Murang'a have been urging KWS officers to intervene and deal with the monkeys.

According to residents in Murang'a County, the monkeys are moving in groups of 20 to 30 while invading their farms.
