China Square on Saturday announced that they will be halting operations temporarily to rethink their strategy following claims of driving local traders out of business. 

Trade and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has promised to assist China Square owner Lei Cheng to set up a manufacturing plant in Kenya.

In an update on Sunday, February 26, CS Kuria stated that the manufacturing plant would collaborate with local traders rather than competing with them in the retail business.

“I will assist China Square Owner Mr Cheng to set up a manufacturing plant in Kenya and work on a distribution partnership with Gikomba, Nyamakima, Eastleigh, Kamukunji, Muthurwa and River Road Traders,” Kuria tweeted.

China Square on Saturday February 25 announced that it would halt its operations temporality for evaluation of its strategy following claims that it had driven Kenyan traders out of business with lowly priced goods.

"This decision has been made to allow us to re-evaluate and replan our company strategy, in order to better serve our customers and meet their needs. We are also considering the possibility of cooperating with local traders to enhance our offerings and better integrate with the community.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and hope that you will understand our need to take this action," China Square announced.

Gikomba and Nyamakima traders had met with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua last week and aired their concerns including the China Square business.
