Gachagua on Thursday last week stated that the MCAs knew what they would earn before vying and therefore should be contented with their salaries.

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malalah has differed with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Members of the County Assembly (MCA) salaries.

Speaking on Monday, June 26 during an interview with Radio Citizen, Malala remarked that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reduced salaries for MCAs weeks before the August 9, 2022, general election.

“Five weeks before the August 9 2022 general election, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) gazetted a new salary for MCAs which was lesser than what they were earning before. That was a mistake because before someone decides to vie for a MCA seat there is an expectation on how much money one will earn,” said Malalah.

The former Kakamega Senator claimed that MCAs are currently earning about Ksh 50 thousand after deductions.

“After the election MCAs realized that the salary they knew they were going to earn is different from what they are receiving after SRC gazetted a lesser salary. MCAs earn around Ksh Ksh89,000 before deductions. After deductions MCAs remain with around Ksh50,000,” he added.

His remarks come days after DP Gachagua told off MCAs over threatening to strike over low salaries.

Speaking on Thursday last week, Gachagua stated that the MCAs knew what they would earn before vying and therefore should be contented.

"You cannot vie for a seat knowing the salary and ask for a raise after you are elected. We do not have money. You can put sufurias on your head and throw other tantrums but we do not have money to give you. Be content with your salaries and serve the people since you vied for the seats willingly,” said Gachagua.
