“It is time to amend the Law and the Constitution of Kenya so that, when a Governor is impeached he should go home with his/her government."

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina now wants the constitution amended to allow governors to go home with their deputy governors and the entire government in case of impeachment.

In a statement via Twitter on Saturday, September 24, Ledama said deputy governors are becoming mischievous and the only way to tame them is to amend the Constitution.

“It is time to amend the Law and the Constitution of Kenya so that, when a Governor is impeached he should go home with his/her government as per article 179 of the constitution and a new team seeks the people’s mandate to govern! Deputy Governors are becoming mischievous,” said Ledama.

The Narok senator also suggested that Article 96 of the Constitution be fully operationalised for senators to oversee county governments.

“We must now pass legislations to fully operationalize this article and provide that Should a Senator sue a county government on a matter of public interest, all legal fees must be paid for by the County Government save for personal matters,” he added.

Ledama's proposal comes at a time when Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and her deputy Isaac Mutuma M'Ethingia are at loggerheads.

Mutuma claims that Governor Mwangaza is demeaning his office, that he is not being allowed to inspect projects and that officials working in his office are being illegally dismissed.

The Meru deputy governor's office has also been moved from the current Meru County headquarters, which houses the governor's offices, to the old headquarters.

A section of Meru MCAs has accused Governor Mwangaza of abuse of office and other maladministration.

Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi has also called for Mwangaza's ouster, saying there are underlying issues that can only be resolved through impeachment.
