"To participate would be to betray IEBC staff who were tortured and murdered and a reward for impunity."

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati and former commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu have declined an invitation to appear before the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO).

In a statement on Thursday September 28, Chebukati said they will not discuss issues that have already been resolved.

The former IEBC chairman also noted that appearing before the committee will be a betrayal of the IEBC staff who were tortured and murdered.

“Prof Abdi Guliye Molu Boya & I won’t be appearing before the National Dialogue Committee to discuss issues that have been resolved. To participate would be to betray IEBC staff who were tortured & murdered & a reward for impunity,” he stated.

At the same time, Chebukati called for the formation of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the events that took place in the Bomas of Kenya on 15 August 2022.

“It is our fervent hope that in due course, a Commission of Inquiry will be set up to investigate the unfortunate incidences of August 15, 2022 at Bomas of Kenya which brought the image of our country into disrepute,” Chebukati added.

The former IEBC chairman noted that the commission of inquiry should also uncover the reasons why some of the commission's staff were abducted, tortured or even killed during the election period and identify those responsible for these atrocities.

“The outcome of such an Inquiry will bolster the independence of the Commission (IEBC) and ensure that it maintains the stature contemplated in the Constitution of Kenya,” Chebukati asserted.

NADCO on Monday invited Chebukati together with former commissioners Guliye and Molu to make submissions on the conduct of the 2022 elections.
