"The airport's backup generators were activated, with full restoration of power occurring within 8 - 20 mins."

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has come out to explain the blackout experience at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after the country experienced a power outage on Saturday, November 11 night.

In a statement via X, KAA said the international airport’s generators were activated and power was restored within eight to twenty minutes.

“At approximately 8 PM today, JKIA experienced a disruption in power supply due to an outage from the national grid. The airport's backup generators were activated, with full restoration of power occurring within 8 - 20 mins,” KAA stated.

The authority went on to explain that other facilities reinstated their power supply in a considerably shorter duration.

“The synchronization of the outstanding backup power supply is scheduled to be completed in the next 30 days in readiness for instant backup support in the event of any power interruption,” KAA added.

The statement comes after Kenyans expressed their displeasure with JKIA’s preparedness for blackouts.

This was the second time JKIA was experiencing a blackout in recent months.

On August 27 Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen sacked Alex Gitari as the KAA Managing Director following a power outage that was witnessed across the country. He appointed Henry Ogoye to take over the KAA top job in an acting capacity.

The Transport CS also said his ministry had put in place measures to ensure the incident does not happen again.

“In order to ensure that a similar incident is not replicated, it has been decided that the two generators that were procured more than two years ago be immediately commissioned,” said Mr Murkomen.
