Governor Abdulswamad Nassir's Statement As Rains Wreak Havoc In Mombasa

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has broken silence on the ongoing floods in Mombasa County.

In a statement on Friday, November 17, the Mombasa Governor said heavy rains have persisted in the county since Thursday, causing the floods.

Nassir however said the county rescue team has been deployed to deal with emergencies in the county.

“The country is currently experiencing unprecedented rainfall that resulted in widespread flooding. The rains have persisted since yesterday here in Mombasa. Our rescue teams are on hand to deal with emergencies,” read the statement in part.

The Mombasa Governor at the same time asked residents in need of medical and rescue assistance to reach out to the county disaster team through 0707911911 or 0788911911.

“Please reach out through the contact hotlines below for medical and rescue emergencies,” he added.

Videos seen by nairobileo.co.ke showed several vehicles swept by the heavy floods making it difficult for the locals to commute. Some of the roads in the county were also submerged by the floods. 

This comes days after the Kenya Meteorological Department Director David Gikungu announced that the ongoing rainfall across the country is El Nino.

He apologized to Kenyans for the inconsistencies in the predictions and asked Kenyans to prepare for enhanced rainfall.

“I want to point out that as initially given in the forecast we have El Nino in this short rain season 2023 and we do apologize for the miscommunication because that was a big mistake and we are sorry. moving forward let us prepare for the enhanced rainfall as a result of the El Nino phenomenon that we are in,” said Gikungu.
